Building something real requires choosing where to plant it. This is not a small decision. The land you choose becomes part of what you are building. It shapes the work, the community, the pace, the possibility.
Rwanda was not chosen primarily for its policies, though the regulatory environment is genuinely clear and functional. It was not chosen for ease, because nothing about this work is easy. It was chosen because when we stood on the land in Kayonza District, in the Eastern Province, something said yes.
There is a quality of morning light in Rwanda that is difficult to describe. Clean air. Red earth. Hills that hold silence rather than interrupt it. A country that has, through extraordinary collective will, made a serious attempt at building something with integrity on ground that has known tremendous pain.
There is something appropriate about choosing this ground for a retreat whose entire purpose is honest seeing. Rwanda does not allow you to be sentimental. It asks you to look clearly at what happened and what is being built. This is, in essence, what meditation asks too.
The Nature Ineza retreat centre sits on approximately three hectares in Kayonza District, in the Eastern Province — a site zoned for ecotourism, with access to natural forest, morning views, and the silence that is increasingly rare and increasingly necessary.
We are building slowly and carefully. Eco-lodges of stone and wood. A covered meditation pavilion. Walking paths. Solar lighting. A kitchen where Miriam will cook from local ingredients, in the way that food is meant to be cooked — with attention.
Until the centre opens, we bring the same quality of presence to Nyandungu Eco Park and wherever you need us. The location changes. The work is the same.
